Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ is a beautiful hybrid succulent known for its pastel-colored leaves and compact, symmetrical rosette shape. This plant is a cross between Pachyphytum and Echeveria species, inheriting the best characteristics of both genera.

      Key Characteristics of Pachyveria ‘Opalina’:

      • Foliage: Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ has thick, fleshy leaves that are shaped like elongated ovals or almonds. The leaves are typically a soft, pale blue-green with a powdery coating of farina (epicuticular wax), giving the plant a slightly frosted or opalescent appearance. The tips of the leaves can blush pink or lavender, especially when the plant is exposed to bright sunlight or during colder weather.
      • Size: The rosettes of Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ usually grow to about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) in diameter. The plant itself remains fairly compact, making it ideal for small pots, dish gardens, or as part of a mixed succulent arrangement.
      • Flowers: In the spring or summer, Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ may produce small, bell-shaped flowers on tall, slender stalks. The flowers are typically pinkish-orange and add a lovely accent to the plant’s pastel hues.

      Care Tips for Pachyveria ‘Opalina’:

      • Light: This succulent thrives in bright, indirect light to full sun. To maintain its compact form and enhance the color of its leaves, ensure it receives plenty of sunlight. Indoors, a south or west-facing window is ideal. If the plant starts to stretch or lose its vibrant color, it may need more light.
      • Watering: Water using the “soak and dry” method. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering in the winter when the plant’s growth slows down. Avoid getting water on the leaves, as the farina can be easily rubbed off, which affects the plant’s appearance.
      • Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus or succulent mix. Adding perlite or sand to the mix can improve drainage further. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot, which Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ is susceptible to if left in wet soil for too long.
      • Temperature: Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ prefers warm temperatures and can tolerate some heat. It thrives in temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). It is not frost-tolerant, so it should be protected from temperatures below 40°F (4°C). If you live in a cooler climate, bring the plant indoors during the winter.
      • Propagation: This plant can be propagated through leaf cuttings, offsets, or seeds. Leaf propagation is relatively easy—gently remove a healthy leaf, let it callous over for a few days, and then place it on well-draining soil. The leaf will eventually sprout roots and a new rosette.
      • Maintenance: Pachyveria ‘Opalina’ is a low-maintenance plant. Remove any dead or damaged leaves from the base of the rosette to keep the plant looking tidy. If the plant becomes leggy due to lack of light, you can cut off the rosette and replant it, allowing the base to produce new offsets.
      • Pests and Diseases: This plant is generally pest-resistant but can occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Check the plant regularly and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
