Echinopsis oxygona, commonly known as the Easter Lily Cactus or Pink Easter Lily Cactus, is a beautiful and easy-to-care-for cactus species native to South America. This cactus is particularly popular for its large, showy flowers that bloom in the spring and summer, often in shades of pink, white, or purple. It’s a favorite among cactus enthusiasts for its stunning blooms and relatively simple care requirements.

      Key Characteristics:

      • Shape: Echinopsis oxygona is a globular or slightly columnar cactus that typically grows up to 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) in height and 4-8 inches (10-20 cm) in diameter. The plant’s body is usually a dark green color with pronounced ribs.
      • Spines: The ribs are adorned with clusters of short, sharp spines that vary in color from white to brownish-yellow.
      • Flowers: The most striking feature of Echinopsis oxygona is its large, funnel-shaped flowers. These blooms can be up to 6 inches (15 cm) in diameter and are usually pink, white, or light purple. The flowers open at night and can last for a day or two, releasing a pleasant fragrance.
      • Growth Habit: Echinopsis oxygona tends to produce offsets (pups) around the base, which can be left to form a cluster or removed for propagation.

      Care Tips for Echinopsis oxygona:

      1. Light:
        • This cactus thrives in bright, direct sunlight. It should be placed in a location where it can receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight per day. If grown indoors, a south-facing window is ideal. Insufficient light can lead to elongated, weak growth (etiolation).
      2. Watering:
        • Water the cactus thoroughly during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce watering in the fall and winter, when the cactus is dormant. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so it’s important to ensure that the soil dries out properly.
      3. Soil:
        • Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix. Adding perlite, pumice, or coarse sand to the soil can improve drainage, which is essential for preventing waterlogged roots.
      4. Temperature:
        • Echinopsis oxygona prefers warm temperatures during the growing season, ideally between 70-85°F (21-29°C). It can tolerate cooler temperatures down to about 50°F (10°C) but should be protected from frost. If grown outdoors, it can be brought inside during the winter months if necessary.
      5. Fertilizing:
        • Fertilize the cactus once a month during the growing season with a balanced, diluted cactus fertilizer. Avoid fertilizing during the winter when the plant is dormant.
      6. Propagation:
        • Echinopsis oxygona can be easily propagated by removing the offsets (pups) that form around the base of the plant. Allow the offsets to callous for a few days before planting them in well-draining soil. The cactus can also be grown from seeds, but this method is slower.
      7. Pests and Diseases:
        • This cactus is generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract mealybugs or spider mites. Inspect the plant regularly and treat any infestations with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Be mindful of root rot, which can occur if the cactus is overwatered or the soil is poorly draining.
